Will Israel once again get away with murder?

An Israeli soldier stands guard aboard a naval vessel as Gaza-bound ships are intercepted in the Mediterranean Sea

By Yasmeen Ahmed- I, along with many of you couldn’t sleep last night, and was then faced this morning with trying to shake off the madness of yet another event that marks the long and bloody history linked to Palestine; yet another event which will remain embedded in our minds forever; wishing it was just a nightmare, but knowing it was very, very real.  How can we even begin to try to comprehend what took place yesterday?

The Gaza Strip has been under heightened Israeli blockade since 2007.  Amnesty International has termed the blockade as a “collective punishment” resulting in a “humanitarian crisis”; UN officials have described the situation as “grim”, “deteriorating” and a “medieval siege, (and that is putting it mildly).

Israel claims there are no shortages in Gaza, pointing to the aid it allows in.

The Gaza Freedom Flotilla set off from Cyprus laden with thousands of tons OF AID for the blockaded Gaza Strip.  Independent officials checked the cargo.  It was to be one of the biggest humanitarian aid efforts to help the effected people of Gaza.

In the run up to the event Israel repeatedly said they will not allow the boats to reach Gaza.  The Mavi Marmara was under the control of the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation, (the IHH), which Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak described as, “a violent extremist organisation that supports terrorism.”  Both he and Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon stated with so called ‘good reason’ that the entire Freedom Flotilla had been a “deliberate provocation” towards Israel!

They are trying to justify their actions that followed based on what they have fabricated.  Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has given his full backing to the military action.  According to Netanyahu, the Israeli soldiers were, “attacked and defending themselves in the raid”.  The things they say in defence of the massacre that followed can only be described as absolutely ludicrous.

The Israeli leadership is and always has been blatant about its objectives, and they carry on like they believe they are above any law, any courts or tribunals….and the sad reality is that up until now, they have been.

Shameless statements like this from Israeli leaders should come as no surprise to us, we have been faced with the like time and time again over history, these are some examples of what they utter from their mouths, (and know that what is in their hearts is far worse):-

“We must expel Arabs and take their places.” -David Ben Gurion, 1937, Ben Gurion and the Palestine Arabs, Oxford University Press 1985

“There is no such thing as a Palestinian people…It is not as if we came and threw them out and took their country.  They didn’t exist.” -Golda Meir, statement to The Sunday Times, 15th June, 1969

“(Israel will) create in the course of the next ten or twenty years conditions which would attract natural and voluntary migration of the refugees from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to Jordan.  To achieve this we have to come to agreement with King Hussein and not with Yasser Arafat.” -Yitzhak Rabin, (a “Prince of Peace” by Clinton’s standards), explaining his method of ethnically cleansing the occupied land without stirring a world outcry. New York Times, 4th April 1983

“(The Palestinians), would be crushed like grasshoppers…heads smashed against the boulders and walls.” -Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, in a speech to Jewish settlers New York Times, 1st April, 1988

“When we have settled the land, all the Arabs will be able to do about it will be to scurry around like drugged cockroaches in a bottle.” -Raphael Eitan, Chief of Staff of The Israeli Defence Forces, New York Times, 14th April 1983

“Israel may have the right to put others on trial, but certainly no one has the right to put the Jewish people and the State of Israel on trial.” -Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, 25th March 2001, quoted in BBC News Online.
