COMMENT- Diane Abbot ‘Twitter Race Row’

By Majed Iqbal- Shadow health minister Diane Abbott has apologised after posting a comment online, sparking off a race row. On her Twitter account she wrote : “White people love playing ‘divide and rule’. We should not play their game.”

The comments have hit press headlines over her 140 characters comment as she suddenly finds herself plunging into a possible career crisis. Responding back she tried to explain that she was talking about colonialism and not any domestic issues.

Asked about the comments on Sky News she said: “I think the tweet has been taken out of context and some people have misinterpreted it maliciously.”

“I understand people have interpreted my comments as making generalisations about white people. I do not believe in doing that. I apologise for any offence caused.”

So worked up about the whole controversy, she even walked off from a Sky News interview to anser a Phone call!

Only last week the Stephen Lawrence case was put to rest with the sentencing of 2 out of many other men for the racist attack and murder of an innocent Black man.

Whilst many lambasted Diane Abbot for her remarks for being racist against white people, can it honestly be said that racism is very much dead and buried in Modern Britain today?

Home Office data published in 2007 showed that black people were still six times more likely than whites to be stopped and searched, and Asians are twice as likely.

In 2004 Radio 5 ran a covert operation to see exactly how Employers respond to Fictitious CV’s sent from people with Asian, Black and Muslim Names. Results? White “candidates” were far more likely to be given an interview than similarly qualified black or Asian “names”.

Many Black British football stars and sport personalities have faced racism on and off the pitch. Last years riots up and down the country had elements of racism involved when a young Black man died under Police Custody.

In the last years many Asian Police officers have come out and complained about discrimination in opportunities in the Police Force. A BBC documentary aired in 2003 saw an undercover BBC reporter join the Police force to reveal racist attitudes of Police Officers on duty when dealing with the Public.

Broken Britain continues today to suffer from such ills despite people of colour taking on important positions in Society.

In Islam, Allah (swt) has fashioned the bonds between Muslims based on Faith and made rejecting each other based on colour forbidden. In the Last sermon of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw) he reminded humanity “An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab. A white person has no superiority over black person  nor a black person has any superiority over a white person except by piety and good action”

On the authority of Ubayy Bin Ka’b The Prophet said : “If anyone proudly asserts his descent in the manner of the pre-Islamic people, tell him to bite his father’s penis, and do not use a euphemism“. [Mishkat Al-Masabih, Vol. 2, p. 1021]

Islam is therefore unique in moulding people whilst liberalism and Colonialism as mentioned by Diane Abbots is continuing to rip from the seams in being able to deal with differences.

    Dear Editor

    Re: Murder of Stephen Lawrence
The problem with Britain and its citizens is that they will not accept facts and face the truth. I have been here since 1966 and faced nothing but institutionalised racism. The problem is that no one dares to bring to public knowledge, or accept it as being present in our British Society. Institionualised racism is embedded in our British society, culture, in its many institutions, namely the Police, Schools, Colleges, Universities, Hospitals, Solicitors, Bar Chambers, you name it is victim of self inflicting wound of institutionalised racism. Repeated riots, convictions of Lawrence murderers demonstrate well that Britain nurtures institutionalised racism.
We heard a British Black politician Diana Abbot speak out the truth about British policy of divide and rule. It is very rare for a politician to speak the truth. The divide and rule policy was very successfully executed by the British to rob and then divide continents, states, during their expanding British empire, and India was a victim of that policy too along with Africa and the Middle East. Diana Abbott was forced into silence, in a so called free and democratic British society.
Britain needs to face the music and accept that Britain breeds and nurtures racism through instititualisation. Britain needs to change its laws on Murder punishment to death penalty which the Stephen Lawrence Murders deserve for such a cowardly attack by White British gang on a Black British. Unfortunately we have faced racism throughout the world and not just in Britain, as the Bible and Quran tell us of the Habeel and Kabeel murder over a black sister (Abel and Kane). So do we accept racism as Mother Nature’s blessing from Heaven?
This institutionalised racism, political racism, public sector leads me to question whether our sitting MP for Rochdale is Racist or not? I will suggest that our present sitting MP is racist, who denies his Asian constituents the listening ear, who are engulfed in socio-economic deprivation, living in dumps, ghettos such Freehold Area. He has not bothered to attend or respond to a Freehold Group meeting to discuss area issues invite nearly over a year ago. Hence racism is in existence, you only need to overturn the stone as the saying goes.
I do hope that the same Asian British will kick out the sitting MP for Rochdale at the next General election. Britain deserves better, and freedom from embedded institutionalised racism. Would you not agree?

    Yours sincerely

    DR Mohammed Salim
