By Majed Iqbal- Inshallah you are all in the best state of health and Imaan. Please take time to send durood upon the Prophet (saw) especially on the Day of Jumah. Abu Hurayrah (ra) may Allah be pleased with him narrated Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “The person who recites eighty times on Friday (the following supplication) immediately after Asr Salah, before standing up from his place, eighty years of his sins will be forgiven by Allah and the reward equivalent to eighty years of worship will be written for him: Allahuma Sallay Ala  Sayyidina Muhammadin Nabiyyil Ummiyi wa Ala Aalihi Wa sallim Tasleema[Al-Jami Al-Saghir; Allamah Sakhaawi RA in Al-Qawl al-Badee’; Imaam Daraqutni RA and Al Muassah al-Rayyan]

And continue to send durood and salaam upon the Holy Prophet (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) every day inshallah

We are now into the Holy month of Rajab. Inshallah, todays discussion will center around its importance, historical events which took place in this blessed month and what we as an Ummah need to do in this month.

The Holy Month Of Rajab

Rajab, is one of the four sacrosanct months in the Islamic year. Believers are encouraged to use Rajab and Sha`ban in preparation for the holy month of Ramadhan. If there were any missed fasts from the year before which require keeping, then we have often found the month of Rajab being used to make them up and start clean to readily prepare ourselves for the upcoming month of Ramadhan, Islam’s holiest Month in the Islamic Calendar.

In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the two [Imams] have related from the hadith of Abu Bakrata (Allah be well pleased with him) that Allah’s Messenger (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) gave a speech during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and during it said “Verily, truly time has revolved like the day on which Allah created the heavens and the earth! The year is twelve months, including four [that are] sacrosanct; three consecutive [months]: Dhu al-qa`da, Dhu al-hijja, and al-Muharram; and Rajab which is between Jumada and Shu`ban.”

and he mentioned the ayah where Allah Mighty, the Majestic says:

Lo! the number of months with Allah is twelve months by Allah’s ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them. (Qur’an, Al-Tauba, 9:36).

The Immense admiration of Rajb by Nabi (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam)

It has been mentioned by Abu Nuaim in ‘Hilya’ from Anas Ibn Malik (Allah be pleased with him) he said, that the Messenger of Allah (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam)

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam), used to make the following Dua when the month of Rajab began.  ‘Allahuma Barik lana fi Rajaba wa Sha’bana wa ballighna Ramadhan’

Oh Allah! Bless us in Rajab and Sha`ban, and bring us, oh Allah, to Ramadan.” [Narrated by Tabarani and Ahmad]

It has been mentioned by Abul Fath ibn Abil-Fawaris in his Amali (dictations and transmissions) and Allama Suyuti has also mentioned in his Jami Saghir from Hasan Basri that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, ‘Rajab is the month of Allah. Shaban is my month. Ramadhan is the month of my ummah (followers).’

Rajab- History in the Making

In this blessed month, many historic events took place which hugely affected the Muslim Ummah and the the pages of history were re-written. These momentous events shaped the future of the Muslim Ummah which we need to reflect upon in order to understand the world we live in today.

  • On 27th Rajab the Mi’raj The holy Prophet (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) ascended to heaven & returned with the news that Islam will rule all over the world
  • The second Oath of Aqabah took place in Rajab when the first Islamic State was established by The holy Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam)
  • The Battle of Tabouk took place in the year 9 A.H against the Romans. This was the last battle which The holy Prophet Muhammad (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) participated in.
  • On 28th Rajab, Imam Husayn ibn Ali (Radi Allah Ta’lah Anhu) started his journey to Kufa from Medina to stop Yazid from forcefully taking over the Khilafah
  • Jerusalem was liberated by Salahuddeen in Rajab, 583 A.H. under the Khaleefah Al-Nasar
  • On 28th Rajab 1342 A.H. (3 March 1924), the Ottoman Khilafah government was destroyed by traitor Kamal Ataturk

The gravity of the Matter

The Prophet (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) said: “The knots of Islam will be broken one by one until everyone of them is undone. The first to be undone will be the knot of ruling and the last will be the knot of Salah” (Musnad of Imam Ahmed)

It was the great scholar, Imam Ghazali (Rahmatullah Alayh) who said on contemplating on the destruction of the Khilafah

“The judges will be suspended, the Wilayaat (provinces) will be nullified, … the decrees of those in authority will not be executed and all the people will be on the verge of Haraam”. (al Iqtisaad fil Itiqaad page 240)

It was in the month of Rajab that the Muslim Ummah received one of its biggest blows, the destruction of the Khilafah State, the central component of Implementing Islam in state and society and a protection humanity under its unparalleled Justice that it delivered to the world.

Imam al-Qurtubi (Rahmatullah Alayh) said in his Tafseer of the verse,

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً

“Indeed, man is made upon this earth a Khaleefah” (TMQ 2:30)

stated that:

“This Ayah is a source in the selection of an Imaam, and a Khaleefah, he is listened to and he is obeyed, for the word is united through him, and the Ahkam (laws) of the Khaleefah are implemented through him, and there is no difference regarding the obligation of that between the Ummah, nor between the Imams” (Tafseer ul-Qurtubi 264/1.)

Imam al-Qurturbi (Rahmatullah Alayh) also said, “The Khilafah is the pillar upon which other pillars rest”

Our commitment

Muslims should use the Holy month of Rajab to increase in their ibadaat, Salah, fasting, Dhikr, contemplation, and start making plans and preparations for Ramadhan now. This month should also be used to remember the greatest catastrophe in Human history with the suspension of the Islamic system and laws that took place in 1924.

The uprisings in the Muslim world have set the pitch for change and movement and have opened the door of opportunity for an Islamic Change to the state of our affairs. Muslims should organise talks, Conferences, rallies to galvanise the masses on this hugely important matter, failure of which renders muslims to be sinful if they do not work to actively to install a Khaleefah into power who implements the Shariah upon Muslim societies.

The subject of discussions at Jumahs should articulate the work for Khilafah in the month of Rajab and throughout the year.

The Prophet (Salallahu-aleihi-wasallam) in response to his Uncles, the chiefs and politicians in Mecca who began to see his active work for Bringing Islam as a state Authority said to them when they tried to bargain with him ‘O my uncle, by Allah, if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left in return for my giving up this cause, I would not give it up until Allah makes Truth victorious, or I die in His service.

May Allah SWT give us the strength to worship Allah SWT to the best of our ability and prepare well for the coming months of Mercy and make us of those who use the Holy months of Rajab, Shaban and Ramadhan to re-energise our work for the mighty task of re-establishing the noor of this world, the Khilafah. Ameen.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu

JazkahAllah khair.. So refreshing to be reminded of the necessary Nawafil as well as the historical and political view to adopt of Rajab.
